All About Us ~
In 1988, six gentlemen and their wives got together and started a carving club in a local mall.
Over the past 30+ years, the Central Valley Woodcarvers have been meeting to enjoy the hobby of woodcarving, renewing old & making new friendships and working together to put on an annual Woodcarving Show which draws carvers and visitors from Canada, the US and occasionally abroad!
The mandate and purpose of the Central Fraser Valley Woodcarvers was to provide an opportunity for experienced and beginner carvers alike, to advance their skills and share knowledge, techniques, and to give encouragement to others freely.
Hence, the annual "Art of the Carver" show and sale was born to showcase the Club's talents, as well as those who particuipate from around BC, the West Coast, and beyond.
Why Carve?
Carving is an activity that has been done by man for thousands of years. It was originally done as a means of producing useful articles from wood, a commodity available over most of the world.
Our fore bearers often had time on their hands; this resulted in them embellishing their useful carved articles into objects that were not only utilitarian, but beautiful as well. Nowadays, very few utilitarian item are carved from wood, now carvings are simply expressions of our humanity, our art, our humor, our history, etc.
Woodcarving is done by people of all ages, and occupations. EVERYONE can carve! Many carvings represent as fine works of art; caricature artists express humor and poke fun at the human condition while still others represent birds and other wildlife in a most realistic way, and some carvings simply celebrate the beauty in the wood itself.
